Dang Hoang (aka Danny Dang) is one of the established names in the classical guitar circle of Vietnam. However, unlike virtually all other well known Vietnamese classical guitarists who have come through the National Conservatory of Music in Saigon, Dang has chosen for himself a very special route!
Staring to learn guitar at the age of seven with his uncle, Dang has subsequently explored all styles of the guitar from folk, classical, flamenco to jazz with many teachers both in Vietnam and the US. In his search for the mastery of his classical guitar artistry, having discovered Zen Buddhism at the age of twenty, Dang eventually became a teacher of Abhidhama and even spent a number of years as a Buddhist monk! He believes that a true artist is not different from a Zen master and through Zen, an artist can discover the ultimate way to express his deep feelings and to communicate most effectively with the audience.
For the VACGS May workshop, Dang will present a selection of works by Dilermando Reis, Francisco Tarrega, Alexandre Tansman, as well as some of his arrangements including “Hòn Vọng Phu”, an epic suite of the Vietnamese legendary composer Le Thuong.
